January 28th, 2024 – Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

ENTRANCE ANTIPHON

The father of the righteous one shall exult;

the mother who begot him shall rejoice.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,

and the love of God,

and the communion of the Holy Spirit

be with you all.

And with your spirit.

Brethren (brothers and sisters), let us acknowledge our sins,

and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries.

I confess to almighty God

and to you, my brothers and sisters,

that I have greatly sinned,

in my thoughts and in my words,

in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,

[All strike their breast]

through my fault, through my fault,

through my most grievous fault;

therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,

all the Angels and Saints,

and you, my brothers and sisters,

to pray for me to the Lord our God.

May almighty God have mercy on us,

forgive us our sins,

and bring us to everlasting life.

Amen.

GLORIA

Glory to God in the highest,

and on earth peace to people of good will.

We praise you,

we bless you,

we adore you,

we glorify you,

we give you thanks for your great glory,

Lord God, heavenly King,

O God, almighty Father.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Begotten Son,

Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,

you take away the sins of the world,

have mercy on us;

you take away the sins of the world,

receive our prayer;

you are seated at the right hand of the Father,

have mercy on us.

For you alone are the Holy One,

you alone are the Lord,

you alone are the Most High,

Jesus Christ,

with the Holy Spirit,

in the glory of God the Father.

Amen.

COLLECT

Let us pray.

Almighty God, you sent among us your only-begotten and most beloved Son to sanctify the bonds of the human family. By the purity of his example, united to the virtues of Mary and Joseph, you show us the perfection of family life. Hear the prayer of your Church: grant husbands and wives the grace to continue in their vocation as spouses and teachers, and lead children in the obedience that is born of love. Through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord and our God, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, forever and ever.

Amen.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING

A reading from the Prophet Isaiah (Is 45:14-17)

Thus says the Lord: ‘The wealth of Egypt and the merchandise of Ethiopia, and the Sabaeans, men of stature, shall come over to you and be yours, they shall follow you; they shall come over in chains and bow down to you. They will make supplication to you, saying, “God is with you only, and there is no other, no god besides him.” Truly, you are a God who lies hidden, O God of Israel, the Saviour. All of them are put to shame and disgraced, the makers of idols go in confusion together. But Israel is saved by the Lord with everlasting salvation; you shall not be put to shame or disgraced to all eternity.’

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

PSALM

Psalm 83 (84)

R. Blessed are those who dwell in your house, O Lord.

My soul is longing and yearning,

is yearning for the courts of the Lord.

My heart and my soul ring out their joy

to God, the living God. R.

The sparrow herself finds a home

and the swallow a nest for her brood;

she lays her young by your altars,

Lord of hosts, my king and my God. R.

They are happy, who dwell in your house,

forever singing your praise.

They are happy, who strength is in you,

in whose hearts are the roads to Sion. R.

EPISTLE

A reading from the Letter of St Paul to the Hebrews (2:11-17)

My brothers, he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified have all one origin. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brethren, saying:

‘I will proclaim your name to my brethren,

in the midst of the congregation I will praise you.’

And again,

‘I will put my trust in him.’

And again,

‘Here am I, and the children God has given me.’

Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same nature, that through death he might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondage. For surely it is not with angels that he is concerned but with the descendants of Abraham. Therefore he had to be made like his brethren in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make expiation for the sins of the people.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Alleluia.
Truly, you are a God who lies hidden,

God of Israel, our saviour.

Alleluia.

GOSPEL

The Lord be with you

And with your spirit.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St Luke (2:41-52)

Glory to you, O Lord.

Now the parents of the Lord Jesus went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to the custom; and when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, but supposing him to be in the company they went a day’s journey, and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintances; and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions; and all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. And when they saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, ‘Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been looking for you anxiously.’ And he said to them, ‘How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?’ And they did not understand the saying which he spoke to them. And he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

AFTER THE GOSPEL

Jesus went down

to Nazareth

with Mary and Joseph,

and was obedient to them.

PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL

Dear brothers and sisters, filled with paschal joy,

let us pray earnestly to God that he, who graciously listened

to the prayers and supplications of his beloved Son,

may now be pleased to look upon us in our lowliness.

Lord, in your mercy

Hear our prayer

CONCLUSION OF THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

Pour out the abundance of your blessing upon our families, O Father of mercy. May they receive from your loving providence aid in every necessity; and when the cares of life have come to an end, may they be reunited in the joy of everlasting life. Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation,

for through your goodness we have received

the bread we offer you:

fruit of the earth and work of human hands,

it will become for us the bread of life.

Blessed be God forever.

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation,

for through your goodness we have received

this wine we offer you:

fruit of the vine and work of human hands,

it will become our spiritual drink.

Blessed be God forever.

PROFESSION OF FAITH

I believe in one God,

the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the Only begotten Son of God,

born of the Father before all ages.

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation

he came down from heaven,

and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,

and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried,

and rose again on the third day

in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory

to judge the living and the dead

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified.

who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.

I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins

and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS

Accept, O Lord, this sacrifice of our salvation. Through the intercession of the Virgin Mary and St. Joseph, may our families live in your friendship and your peace. Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

PREFACE

The Lord be with you.

And with your spirit.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right and just.

It is truly right and just,

Our duty and our salvation,

Always and everywhere to give you thanks, O Lord,

Holy Father, almighty and ever-living God.

When your only-begotten Son came among us,

assuming our condition as man,

he chose to be born into a family

that he might exalt the beauty of your created order

and restore family life

to the glorious dignity of its original state.

The purity and fidelity of spousal love

reigned within the walls of the house in Nazareth;

there shone the willing obedience of the Son of God

to the Virgin Mary and to Joseph, her righteous spouse;

there the peace of mutual affection

engendered a daily fellowship of love.

More noble was that family in the hiddenness of its virtues

than all the kingdoms of the world in their fame and power!

In it, O Father, you were pleased to shelter

the mystery of our redemption in its first beginnings.

As we venerate the grace of your original design for mankind and look with hope to the example of the Holy Family, we raise to you, O Lord, our hymn of praise:

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts.

Heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

You are indeed Holy, O Lord,

The fount of all holiness.

Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray,

by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall,

so that they may become for us

the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.

At the time he was betrayed

And entered willingly into his Passion,

he took bread and, giving thanks, broke it,

and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take this, all of you, and eat of it,

For this is my Body,

Which will be given up for you.

In a similar way, when supper was ended,

he took the chalice

and, once more giving thanks,

he gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take this, all of you, and drink from it,

for this is the chalice of my Blood,

the Blood of the new and eternal covenant,

Which will be poured out for you and for many

for the forgiveness of sins.

Do this in memory of me.

The mystery of faith.

We proclaim your Death, O Lord,

and profess your Resurrection

until you come again.

Therefore, as we celebrate

the memorial of his Death and Resurrection,

we offer you, Lord,

the Bread of life and the Chalice of salvation,

giving thanks that you have held us worthy

to be in your presence and minister to you.

Humbly we pray

that, partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ,

we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.

Remember, Lord, your Church,

spread throughout the world,

and bring her to the fullness of charity,

together with Francis our Pope

and Mario our Bishop,

and all the clergy.

Remember also our brothers and sisters

who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection,

and all who have died in your mercy:

welcome them into the light of your face.

Have mercy on us all, we pray,

that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God,

with blessed Joseph, her Spouse

with the blessed Apostles,

and all the Saints who have pleased you throughout the ages,

we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life,

and may praise and glorify you

through your Son, Jesus Christ.

Through him, and with him, and in him,

O God, almighty Father,

In the unity of the Holy Spirit,

all glory and honour is yours,

Forever and ever

Amen.

THE COMMUNION RITE

BREAKING OF THE BREAD

At the age of twelve, the Lord Jesus

grew in wisdom, age and grace

before God and men.

At the Saviour’s command

and formed by divine teaching,

we dare to say:

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil,

graciously grant peace in our days,

that, by the help of your mercy,

we may be always free from sin

and safe from all distress,

as we await the blessed hope

and the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

For the kingdom,

the power and the glory are yours

now and for ever.

Lord Jesus Christ,

who said to your Apostles:

Peace I leave you, my peace I give you,

look not on our sins,

but on the faith of Your Church,

and graciously grant her peace and unity

in accordance with your will.

Who live and reign for ever and ever.

Amen.

The peace and communion of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you always.

And with your spirit.

Behold the Lamb of God,

behold him who takes away the sins of the world.

Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.

Lord, I am not worthy

that you should enter under my roof,

but only say the word

and my soul shall be healed.

AT HOLY COMMUNION

We glorify you, Mother of God,

because of you was born Christ the Lord,

who saves all those who honour you.

Holy Mother of God,

may we imitate you in the life of grace.

The Body of Christ.

Amen.

AFTER HOLY COMMUNION

Let us pray.

O God, Holy Father, who has nourished us with the Bread of your table and brought us back to life us through the example of the Holy Family: grant to your faithful people, devoted to the vocation of marriage and family life, the grace always to follow the law of your Gospel of love. Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

The Lord be with you.

And with your spirit.

Kyrie, eleison. Kyrie, eleison. Kyrie, eleison.

May almighty God bless you,

the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Amen

Go in peace.

In the name of Christ.
