March 27th, 2022 – Fourth Sunday of Lent

Give light to myeyes, or I will sleep in death; lest my enemy say: “I have overcome him.” Youwho opened the eyes of the man who was born blind, with your light illuminatemy heart so that I can see your works and keep all your precepts.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of theHoly Spirit.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,

and the love of God,

and the communion of the Holy Spirit

be with you all.

And with your spirit.

Brethren (brothers and sisters), let us acknowledgeour sins,

and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacredmysteries.

I confess to almighty God

and to you, my brothers and sisters,

that I have greatly sinned,

in my thoughts and in my words,

in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,

[All strike their breast]

through my fault, through my fault,

through my most grievous fault;

therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,

all the Angels and Saints,

and you, my brothers and sisters,

to pray for me to the Lord our God.

May almighty God have mercy on us,

forgive us our sins,

and bring us to everlasting life.

Glory to God in the highest,

and on earth peace to people of good will.

We praise you,

we bless you,

we adore you,

we glorify you,

we give you thanks for your great glory,

Lord God, heavenly King,

O God, almighty Father.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Begotten Son,

Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,

you take away the sins of the world,

have mercy on us;

you take away the sins of the world,

receive our prayer;

you are seated at the right hand of the Father,

have mercy on us.

For you alone are the Holy One,

you alone are the Lord,

you alone are the Most High,

Jesus Christ,

with the Holy Spirit,

in the glory of God the Father.

O God, who gives support over time to man created in your image inview of eternal goods, multiply the fruitfulness of your Church so that all whoare born to earthly life are reborn to the life of heaven. Through JesusChrist, your Son, our Lord and our God, who lives and reigns with you, in theunity of the Holy Spirit, forever and ever.

A reading of the book ofExodus (17:1-11)

In those days, From thewilderness of Sin the whole Israelite community journeyed by stages, as theLord directed, and encamped at Rephidim. But there was no water for the peopleto drink, and so they quarreled with Moses and said, «Give us water to drink.»Moses replied to them, «Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord toa test?» Here, then, in their thirst for water, the people grumbled againstMoses, saying, «Why then did you bring us up out of Egypt? To have us die ofthirst with our children and our livestock?» So Moses cried out to the Lord,«What shall I do with this people? A little more and they will stone me!» TheLord answered Moses: Go on ahead of the people, and take along with you some ofthe elders of Israel, holding in your hand, as you go, the staff with which youstruck the Nile. I will be standing there in front of you on the rock in Horeb.Strike the rock, and the water will flow from it for the people to drink. Mosesdid this, in the sight of the elders of Israel. The place was named Massah andMeribah, because the Israelites quarreled there and tested the Lord, saying, «Isthe Lord in our midst or not?» Then Amalek came and waged war against Israel inRephidim. So Moses said to Joshua, «Choose some men for us, and tomorrow go outand engage Amalek in battle. I will be standing on top of the hill with thestaff of God in my hand.» Joshua did as Moses told him: he engaged Amalek inbattle while Moses, Aaron, and Hur climbed to the top of the hill. As long asMoses kept his hands raised up, Israel had the better of the fight, but when helet his hands rest, Amalek had the better of the fight.

The Word of God.

Thanks be to God.

Psalm 35

R. O Lord, in your light we see light.

Lord, your mercy reaches to heaven;

your fidelity, to the clouds.

Your justice is like the highest mountains;

your judgments, like the mighty deep;

human being and beast you sustain, Lord. R.

How precious is your mercy, O God!

The children of Adam take refuge

in the shadow of your wings.

They feast on the rich food of your house;

from your delightful streame

you give them drink. R.

For with you is the fountain of life,

and in your light we see light.

Show mercy on those who know you,

your just defense to the upright of heart. R.

Theletter of saint Paul to the Thessalonians (5:1-11)

Concerning times andseasons, brothers, you have no need for anything to be written to you. For you yourselvesknow very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief at night. Whenpeople are saying, «Peace and security,» then sudden disaster comes upon them, like labor pains upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you, brothers, are not in darkness, for that day to overtake you like a thief. Forall of you are children of the light and children of the day. We are not of thenight or of darkness. Therefore, let us not sleep as the rest do, but let usstay alert and sober. Those who sleep go to sleep at night, and those who aredrunk get drunk at night. But since we are of the day, let us be sober, puttingon the breastplate of faith and love and the helmet that is hope for salvation. For God did not destine us for wrath, but to gain salvation through our LordJesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we maylive together with him. Therefore, encourage one another and build one anotherup, as indeed you do.

The Word of God.

Thanks be to God.

Praise and honor to you,Lord Jesus Christ.

I am the light of theworld, says the Lord:

whoever follows me willhave the light of life.

Praise and honor to you,Lord Jesus Christ.

The Lord be with you

And also with you

A reading of the holygospel according to John (9:1-38b)

Glory to you, Lord.

In that time, As the Lord Jesus passed by hesaw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, «Rabbi, who sinned, thisman or his parents, that he was born blind?» Jesus answered, «Neither he norhis parents sinned; it is so that the works of God might be made visiblethrough him. We have to do the works of the one who sent me while it is day.Night is coming when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the lightof the world.» When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made clay withthe saliva, and smeared the clay on his eyes, and said to him, «Go wash in thePool of Siloam» (which means Sent). So he went and washed, and came back ableto see. His neighbors and those who had seen him earlier as a beggar said,«Isn’t this the one who used to sit and beg?» Some said, «It is,» but otherssaid, «No, he just looks like him.» He said, «I am.» So they said to him, «[So]how were your eyes opened?» He replied, «The man called Jesus made clay andanointed my eyes and told me, 'Go to Siloam and wash.' So I went there andwashed and was able to see.» And they said to him, «Where is he?» He said, «Idon’t know.» They brought the one who was once blind to the Pharisees. NowJesus had made clay and opened his eyes on a sabbath. So then the Phariseesalso asked him how he was able to see. He said to them, «He put clay on myeyes, and I washed, and now I can see.» So some of the Pharisees said, «Thisman is not from God, because he does not keep the sabbath.» [But] others said,«How can a sinful man do such signs?» And there was a division among them. Sothey said to the blind man again, «What do you have to say about him, since heopened your eyes?» He said, «He is a prophet.» Now the Jews did not believethat he had been blind and gained his sight until they summoned the parents ofthe one who had gained his sight. They asked them, «Is this your son, who yousay was born blind? How does he now see?» His parents answered and said, «Weknow that this is our son and that he was born blind. We do not know how hesees now, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him, he is of age; he canspeak for him self.» His parents said this because they were afraid of theJews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone acknowledged him as theMessiah, he would be expelled from the synagogue. For this reason his parentssaid, «He is of age; question him.» So a second time they called the man whohad been blind and said to him, «Give God the praise! We know that this man isa sinner.» He replied, «If he is a sinner, I do not know. One thing I do knowis that I was blind and now I see.» So they said to him, «What did he do toyou? How did he open your eyes?» He answered them, «I told you already and youdid not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become hisdisciples, too?» They ridiculed him and said, «You are that man’s disciple; weare disciples of Moses! We know that God spoke to Moses, but we do not knowwhere this one is from.» The man answered and said to them, «This is what is soamazing, that you do not know where he is from, yet he opened my eyes. We knowthat God does not listen to sinners, but if one is devout and does his will, helistens to him. It is unheard of that anyone ever opened the eyes of a personborn blind. If this man were not from God, he would not be able to do anything.»They answered and said to him, «You were born totally in sin, and are you tryingto teach us?» Then they threw him out. When Jesus heard that they had thrownhim out, he found him and said, «Do you believe in the Son of Man?» He answeredand said, «Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?» Jesus said to him, «Youhave seen him and the one speaking with you is he.» He said, «I do believe,Lord.»

The word of the Lord.

Praise to you, LordJesus Christ.

I will consider all yourworks and meditate on all your mighty deeds. O God, your ways are holy, youhave performed miracles. Lord, break the chains of prisoners and open the eyesof the blind; Lord, lift up those who suffer.

Blessed are you, LordGod of all creation,

for through yourgoodness we have received

the bread we offer you:

fruit of the earth andwork of human hands,

it will become for usthe bread of life.

Blessed be God forever.

Blessed are you, LordGod of all creation,

for through your goodnesswe have received

this wine we offer you:

fruit of the vine and work of human hands,

Blessed be God forever.

I believe in one God,

the Father almighty,

maker of heaven andearth,

of all things visibleand invisible.

I believe in one LordJesus Christ,

the Only begotten Son ofGod,

born of the Fatherbefore all ages.

God from God, Light fromLight,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,consubstantial with the Father;

through him all thingswere made.

For us men and for oursalvation

he came down fromheaven,

and by the Holy Spiritwas incarnate of the Virgin Mary,

and became man.

For our sake he wascrucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death andwas buried,

and rose again on thethird day

in accordance with theScriptures.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at theright hand of the Father.

He will come again inglory

to judge the living andthe dead

and his kingdom willhave no end.

We believe in the HolySpirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from theFather and the Son,

with the Father and theSon is adored and glorified.

who has spoken throughthe prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.

I confess one Baptismfor the forgiveness of sins

and I look forward tothe resurrection of the dead

and the life of theworld to come. Amen.

May these mysteries of ourredemption deter us, O God, from all human bewilderment and guide us in thepaths of salvation. Through Christ our Lord.

The Lord be with you.

And with your spirit.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them up to theLord.

Let us give thanks tothe Lord our God.

It is right and just.

It is truly right andjust, our duty and our salvation,

To give you thanks andpraise, Lord God,

With every power of mindand body,

Because through you theblindness of the world is ended

And for those indarkness the true light has shone forth.

Among the brightestmiracles of your saving power

You bade the man bornblind to gain his sight.

In this you gave us animage

Of how the human race,

Afflicted from itsbeginning by blindness,

Would receive yourhealing light

In the sacred waters ofBaptism.

And so, with all thechoirs of angels,

We praise your glory, now and for ever

As with one voice wesing:

Holy, holy, holy, LordGod of hosts.

Heaven and earth arefull of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comesin the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

You are indeed Holy, OLord,

The fount of allholiness.

Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray,

by sending down yourSpirit upon them like the dewfall,

so that they may becomefor us

the Body and Blood ofour Lord Jesus Christ.

At the time he was betrayed

And entered willinglyinto his Passion,

he took bread and, giving thanks, broke it,

and gave it to hisdisciples, saying:

Takethis, all of you, and eat of it,

Forthis is my Body,

Whichwill be given up for you.

In a similar way, when supperwas ended,

he took the chalice

and, once more givingthanks,

he gave it to hisdisciples, saying:

Takethis, all of you, and drink from it,

forthis is the chalice of my Blood,

theBlood of the new and eternal covenant,

Whichwill be poured out for you and for many

forthe forgiveness of sins.

Dothis in memory of me.

The mystery of faith.

We proclaim your Death,O Lord,

and profess yourResurrection

until you come again.

Therefore, as wecelebrate

the memorial of hisDeath and Resurrection,

we offer you, Lord,

the Bread of life andthe Chalice of salvation,

giving thanks that youhave held us worthy

to be in your presenceand minister to you.

Humbly we pray

that, partaking of theBody and Blood of Christ,

we may be gathered intoone by the Holy Spirit.

Remember, Lord, yourChurch,

spread throughout theworld,

and bring her to thefullness of charity,

together with Francisour Pope

and Mario our Bishop,

and all the clergy.

Remember also our brothersand sisters

who have fallen asleepin the hope of the resurrection,

and all who have died inyour mercy:

welcome them into thelight of your face.

Have mercy on us all, wepray,

that with the BlessedVirgin Mary, Mother of God,

with blessed Joseph, herSpouse

with the blessedApostles,

and all the Saints whohave pleased you throughout the ages,

we may merit to becoheirs to eternal life,

and may praise andglorify you

through your Son, JesusChrist.

Through him, and withhim, and in him,

O God, almighty Father,

In the unity of the HolySpirit,

all glory and honor isyours,

For ever and ever

Brethren, we love light and justice, wewalk as in the day. We aim to make our actions shine in the sight of God.

As the Savior’s command

and formed by divine teaching,

we dare to say:

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

Deliver us, Lord, wepray, from every evil,

graciously grant peacein our days,

that, by the help ofyour mercy,

we may be always freefrom sin

and safe from alldistress,

as we await the blessedhope

and the coming of ourSaviour, Jesus Christ.

For the kingdom,

the power and the gloryare yours

now and for ever.

Lord Jesus Christ,

who said to yourApostles:

behold him who takesaway the sins of the world.

Blessed are those calledto the supper of the Lamb.

Lord, I am not worthy

that you should enterunder my roof,

but only say the word

and my soul shall behealed.

“Come, eat my food,”says the Lord, “drink the wine I have mixed for you and will live.” Give us,Lord Jesus, the hidden manna and do not exclude us from the book of life.
