On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors werelocked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, the Lord Jesus came andstood in their midst and said to them, «Peace be with you.» When he had saidthis, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when theysaw the Lord. [Jesus] said to them again, «Peace be with you. As the Father hassent me, so I send you.» And when he had said this, he breathed on them andsaid to them, «Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiventhem, and whose sins you retain are retained.»

Christ the Lord is risen!

ENTRANCE CHANT

I contemplatethe open skies and Jesus, alive, at the right hand of God. Lord Jesus, welcomemy spirit and do not blame them for this sin because they do not know what theyare doing.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of theHoly Spirit.

Amen.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,

and the love of God,

and the communion of the Holy Spirit

And with your spirit.

Brethren (brothers and sisters), let us acknowledgeour sins,

and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacredmysteries.

I confess to almighty God

and to you, my brothers and sisters,

that I have greatly sinned,

in my thoughts and in my words,

in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,

[All strike their breast]

through my fault, through my fault,

through my most grievous fault;

therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,

all the Angels and Saints,

and you, my brothers and sisters,

to pray for me to the Lord our God.

May almighty God have mercy on us,

forgive us our sins,

and bring us to everlasting life.

Amen.

Glory to God in the highest,

and on earth peace to people of good will.

We praise you,

we bless you,

we adore you,

we glorify you,

we give you thanks for your great glory,

Lord God, heavenly King,

O God, almighty Father.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Begotten Son,

Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,

you take away the sins of the world,

have mercy on us;

you take away the sins of the world,

receive our prayer;

you are seated at the right hand of the Father,

have mercy on us.

For you alone are the Holy One,

you alone are the Lord,

you alone are the Most High,

Jesus Christ,

with the Holy Spirit,

in the glory of God the Father.

Amen.

BEGINNING OF THE LITURGICAL ASSEMBLY

O God, allow us to express in life the faith witnessed by thedeacon and first martyr Stephen, who died forgiving his stoners and closelyimitating Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord and our God, who lives and reignswith you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit ...

FIRST READING

A reading of the Acts ofthe apostles (6:8-7:2a; 7:51-8:4)

In those days, Stephen, filled with grace and power, was working great wonders and signs among thepeople. Certain members of the so- called Synagogue of Freedmen, Cyrenians, andAlexandrians, and people from Cilicia and Asia, came forward and debated withStephen, but they could not withstand the wisdom and the spirit with which hespoke. Then they instigated some men to say, «We have heard him speakingblasphemous words against Moses and God.» They stirred up the people, theelders, and the scribes, accosted him, seized him, and brought him before theSanhedrin. They presented false witnesses who testified, «This man never stopssaying things against [this] holy place and the law. For we have heard himclaim that this Jesus the Nazorean will destroy this place and change thecustoms that Moses handed down to us.» All those who sat in the Sanhedrinlooked intently at him and saw that his face was like the face of an angel. Then the high priest asked, «Is this so?» And he replied, «You stiff-neckedpeople, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always oppose the holy Spirit; youare just like your ancestors. Which of the prophets did your ancestors notpersecute? They put to death those who foretold the coming of the righteousone, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become. You received the law astransmitted by angels, but you did not observe it.» When they heard this, theywere infuriated, and they ground their teeth at him. But he, filled with theholy Spirit, looked up intently to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesusstanding at the right hand of God, and he said, «Behold, I see the heavensopened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.» But they criedout in a loud voice, covered their ears, and rushed upon him together. Theythrew him out of the city, and began to stone him. The witnesses laid downtheir cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul. As they were stoningStephen, he called out, «Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.» Then he fell to hisknees and cried out in a loud voice, «Lord, do not hold this sin against them;»and when he said this, he fell asleep. Now Saul was consenting to hisexecution. On that day, there broke out a severe persecution of the church inJerusalem, and all were scattered throughout the countryside of Judea andSamaria, except the apostles. Devout men buried Stephen and made a loud lamentover him. Saul, meanwhile, was trying to destroy the church; entering houseafter house and dragging out men and women, he handed them over forimprisonment. Now those who had been scattered went about preaching the word.

The Word of God.

Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE

The second letter ofsaint Paul to the Timothy (3:16-4:8)

Beloved, All scriptureis inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may becompetent, equipped for every good work. I charge you in the presence of Godand of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and by hisappearing and his kingly power: proclaim the word; be persistent whether it isconvenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through all patienceand teaching. For the time will come when people will not tolerate sounddoctrine but, following their own desires and insatiable curiosity, willaccumulate teachers and will stop listening to the truth and will be divertedto myths. But you, be self-possessed in all circumstances; put up with hardship;perform the work of an evangelist; fulfill your ministry. For I am alreadybeing poured out like a libation, and the time of my departure is at hand. Ihave competed well; I have finished the race;f I have kept the faith. From nowon the crown of righteousness awaits me, which the Lord, the just judge, willaward to me on that day,g and not only to me, but to all who have longed forhis appearance.

The Word of God.

Thanks be to God.

Hallelujah

Blessed is he who comes

in the name of the Lord.

The light of his faceshines upon us.

Hallelujah

GOSPEL

The Lord be with you

And also with you

A reading of the holygospel according to Matthew (17:24-27)

Glory to you, Lord.

In that time, When theycame to Capernaum, the collectors of the temple tax approached Peter and said,«Doesn’t your teacher pay the temple tax?» «Yes,» he said. When he came intothe house, before he had time to speak, Jesus asked him, «What is your opinion,Simon From whom do the kings of the earth take tolls or census tax? From theirsubjects or from foreigners?» When he said, «From foreigners,» Jesus said tohim, «Then the sub- jects are exempt. But that we may not offend them, go tothe sea, drop in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up. Open its mouthand you will find a coin worth twice the tem- ple tax. Give that to them for meand for you.»

Or

A reading of the holy gospel according toJohn (15:18-22)

Glory to you, Lord.

In that time, The LordJesus said: «If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first. If youbelonged to the world, the world would love its own; but because you do notbelong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, the world hatesyou. Remember the word I spoke to you, 'No slave is greater than his master.'If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, theywill also keep yours. And they will do all these things to you on account of myname, because they do not know the one who sent me. If I had not come andspoken to them, they would have no sin; but as it is they have no excuse fortheir sin.»

The word of the Lord.

Praise to you, LordJesus Christ.

Always here andeverywhere to give you thanks,

Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,

Who called Saint Stephenthe Deacon

To proclaim the Gospelof Christ.

He poured out his bloodfor the sake of your name

As the first martyr ofChrist the Lord;

He saw the heavensthrown open

And the Son standing atthe Father’s right hand.

Stephen took up thewords of his Master

And taught, by theshedding of his blood,

What Christ had spokenupon the cross.

Christ the crucifiedsowed the seed of forgiveness;

Stephen prayed to theLord for those who stoned him.

Now, as we celebrate hismemory

We join the host ofangels and saints

In their exultant hymnof praise:

Holy, holy, holy, LordGod of hosts.

Heaven and earth arefull of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comesin the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

You are indeed Holy, OLord,

The fount of allholiness.

Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray,

by sending down yourSpirit upon them like the dewfall,

so that they may becomefor us

the Body and Blood ofour Lord Jesus Christ.

At the time he was betrayed

And entered willinglyinto his Passion,

he took bread and, giving thanks, broke it,

and gave it to hisdisciples, saying:

Takethis, all of you, and eat of it,

Forthis is my Body,

Whichwill be given up for you.

In a similar way, when supperwas ended,

he took the chalice

and, once more givingthanks,

he gave it to hisdisciples, saying:

Takethis, all of you, and drink from it,

forthis is the chalice of my Blood,

theBlood of the new and eternal covenant,

Whichwill be poured out for you and for many

forthe forgiveness of sins.

Dothis in memory of me.

The mystery of faith.

We proclaim your Death,O Lord,

and profess yourResurrection

until you come again.

Therefore, as wecelebrate

the memorial of hisDeath and Resurrection,

we offer you, Lord,

the Bread of life andthe Chalice of salvation,

giving thanks that youhave held us worthy

to be in your presenceand minister to you.

Humbly we pray

that, partaking of theBody and Blood of Christ,

we may be gathered intoone by the Holy Spirit.

Remember, Lord, yourChurch,

spread throughout theworld,

and bring her to thefullness of charity,

together with Francisour Pope

and Mario our Bishop,

and all the clergy.

Remember also our brothersand sisters

who have fallen asleepin the hope of the resurrection,

and all who have died inyour mercy:

welcome them into thelight of your face.
